What Makes Middle-Grade Fiction Magical

Image
Middle grade fiction is fiction written for children between the ages of 8 to 12. Books like Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and the Famous Five series fall firmly under this category. While middle grade fiction is written for kids, it doesn’t mean that adults can’t read it or it is not worth your time if you are an adult. Middle grade is where some of the most poignant, powerful and transformative stories are shelved. Most middle grade books that children love end up having a monumental impact on their lives. As a child, I remember wishing that I was more like George and could relate to her tom boyish nature and her love for dogs. Without further ado, let’s leap right into what makes middle grade fiction magical below. Everything Seems Possible Middle grade is fiction for children and most stories are told from a child’s point of view. This means that the protagonists of these books are often more creative and curious than adult protagonists. There is a sense that everything is p...

What Writing Children's Books Has Taught Me

Image
Writing for children is the best kind of writing I like to do. Childhood has been such a memorable time, and I have often wished that I could go back and stay there. So one way I go about this, since they haven’t invented time machines yet, I use writing for children as a way of paying homage to my childhood while also keeping in mind childhood today is different from what childhood was back when I was a child. Regardless, children are the best and the most enthusiastic audience you can write for because they are curious and creative and have excellent imaginations. As a children’s book writer you have a wonderful target audience that should motivate you to keep writing and giving writing your best shot. Writing for Kids Is Challenging Kids these days have a ton of ways that they can choose to spend their time. Picking up a book is just one of many and many kids might choose not to do so. Books for children need to grab the attention of the young readers immediately and keep them...

Britain has a plethora of tales that feature magical creatures in its folklore. From well known creatures like dragons to less known creatures like merrows, British folklore is rich with magical creatures that colour stories with magic and mystery. There are so many worth mentioning and this post will be looking at a few of these mysterious magical creatures from British folklore who have stood the test of time. This blog post will explore less known to well known magical creatures. Pixie  Pixies are tiny magical beings often seen in British folklore especially from areas like Devon and Cornwall. These beings are portrayed as mischievous rather than malevolent most of the time in British folklore. They are also said to lead travelers astray. These magical beings are linked to ancient sites and woodland paths. Pixies have found their way to fantasy stories from British folklore in stories such as Peter Pan and Harry Potter. Puca The Puca is a shape shifting spirit from Britis...

Why I Keep Writing Despite Rejection

Image
We all experience rejection in some form, be it in life or in writing. But I think this is not something that we should worry too much about when it comes to writing. Rejection might show you how you need to improve and help you understand what your shortcomings are as a writer. In other words, rejection is great feedback that can help guide you in making you a better writer. Rejection will help you understand what you do well and what you might want to work on to get better as a writer. Currently I am querying my middle grade fantasy novels and let me tell you that I expect to have a couple of rejections in my email inbox every week. While any other type of rejection might sting, a rejection from an agent doesn’t sting as much because it is often the norm in the writing industry. Even the best writers get rejected. But I think this shouldn't stop you from wanting to improve as a writer. We all have room for improvement as professional writers and individuals.  Famous Writer...
