Why Write Poetry?

Poetry sets the mind at ease.

Writing poetry helps one to clear one's mind and focus on the here and now. It sets your mind at ease. Writing about things that happen in your everyday life will help you to come to terms with them. It will help you to deal with the pressure and difficulties one has to face daily. It is debatable if everything happens for a reason. Regardless, writing poetry helps one understand what is happening around them. Writing poetry can help you deal with complicated and conflicting emotions that arise internally and make the external reality bearable.

Poetry helps us understand ourselves.

Writing poetry is a life-long commitment. It takes resilience and endurance to keep on ploughing through tough times. Life can often be challenging. It is up to us to keep moving ahead despite setbacks. Regardless of the saying that says everything happens for a reason, writing poetry helps you hang on. The important thing is not giving in to the temptation to give up. Life is about overcoming setbacks and not dwelling on temporary defeat. In the long run, poetry helps us recollect our thoughts and move ahead as a ship does in a storm. The waves might be ferocious, but the sailor has to take the risk once he finds himself in the merciless waters of the sea. It's either land or the bottom of the ocean. The sailor has to take the risk of the possibility that the ship might capsize. Likewise, writing poetry helps us deal with turbulent emotions by putting pen to paper or fingers on the keyboard.

Poetry helps us focus.

Writing poetry can help us forget the things worrying us and help us make more sense of whatever is going on in our lives. For a poet, poetry is like meditation. Some say poetry is a gift, but it is more of a passion that helps channel observations, emotions, feelings, and thoughts into words. A poem is a snapshot of the poet's thoughts at that moment in time. As everything around us changes all the time, so do the thoughts and emotions that flash across a poet's mind, which is also is subject to change. Likewise

Poetry makes us better communicators.

Poetry helps us to express our thoughts succinctly. By writing poetry, we learn to express our thoughts clearly and concisely. We become better at expressing ourselves. We began to learn how to use our words expressively to express our ideas in chunk size verses. We can become better at describing things and gaining better insights into our lives. By writing poems, we become better at putting our thoughts into our words. We begin to understand what words are best suitable in what order.

Self-expression

Most poets use poetry as a form of self-expression. They use poems as a medium to express their thoughts, and poets use poems to communicate their opinions, ideas, beliefs, and emotions. In addition, most poets use poems to share with the world to express their feelings artistically. Finally, poetry can be used as a means of conveying detailed thoughts in a digestible way.

As a means of self-discovery

Poetry can be used as a means of self-exploration. It is a versatile medium of art that allows us to explore our innermost thoughts, feelings, dreams, wishes and anxieties. We sometimes find it hard to come to terms with ourselves, our thoughts, feelings and ideas. Poetry can act as an outlet for conveying these thoughts and emotions. As a result, we learn to express our feelings articulately and clearly.

As a means of recovery

Poetry can help us recover from traumatic and distressful events. Poems can help us to come to terms with our losses and grief. It can help us make sense of things in quite an uncanny way. We all lose loved ones and people from our lives. Poems help us deal with the trauma, the anger, the guilt, the fear we all have to trade in our journey towards becoming better versions of ourselves.

Poetry helps us become better.

Poetry helps us evaluate our lives, look back and reflect on ourselves and our interactions. We can analyse ourselves and become better by correcting our shortcomings. We can identify where we can improve to become better as a work in progress. We are all different, and we all have different abilities. We can locate our strengths and weaknesses.

Poetry helps us prepare for tragedy.

The unforeseen and expected tragedy is a part of human life. We go through many tragic incidents in our life when we lose loved ones in death and different sorts of situations—coming to terms with separation in relationships and so many other occasions that make us feel lost in the realm of grief. We can explore our feeling by writing poems and expressing our thoughts and feelings in verse.

We can use poetry to show our appreciation.

Most poetry is written in praise of things. Poetry helps us express our gratitude towards people, situations and events, and we can learn to see the good in the bad and the beautiful in the ugly. It helps us keep an eye out for beauty and look at the positive things in life. Poetry opens up our lives to all the beauty we overlook and helps us appreciate what we often forget! Poetry helps us identify different things that we care about and give thanks and be grateful for all the little but essential things in life. Poetry allows us to value ourselves, others, places and unique experiences that are special and universal at the same time.

Poetry opens our mind to possibilities.

Poems make us realise and identify the different possibilities that come to us as unforeseen opportunities. We can explore these opportunities that come to us through engaging in writing poetry. Poetry helps us to identify the different possibilities that exist in the world around us. It helps us come to terms with these. We can explore these opportunities by writing poetry.
