What is Love? | Answering the Most Googled Questions

Being human, this is often a question you might stumble upon at some point in your life. There are different ways, sides and you could say types of love, which makes love a unique and universal feeling that is experienced by humans (and one could say by animals too). Love has been explored across different fields such as literature, music, psychology and even science! The word love can mean many different things to different people, and each of us have our own definition and understanding as to what love is and perhaps ought to be. But it is important to remember that we don’t live in an ideal world, we live in a real one, which we must keep in mind when exploring the philosophical and existential question of ‘what is love?’ Let’s explore some key characteristics of love below!

Love is a Universal Feeling

If you are sentient, chances are you have experienced love, be it from a parent, friend, or significant other (try to think of some time you have experienced someone’s love). Love is a feeling most of us search for, and often make comparisons and have opinions on throughout our lives. Sometimes, the definition of love we have, changes as we go through life from childhood to adulthood. We also tend to experience love in different ways throughout our lifespan. While we might have our unique definitions, opinions and thoughts about love, being human is, in a way, love. As humans we are born and are capable of great acts of love, which goes hand in hand with sacrifice and kindness.

Love is a Powerful Emotion

Love is a very powerful emotion. If you love something or someone, it is easy to do something, be it practising a hobby like writing or preparing dinner for your parents. Love is an emotion that can motivate us to get things done and can help us see things through, even when it’s tough to make progress. Throughout history we have seen powerful examples of love, be it the Taj Mahal or the teaching of Jesus in christianity. Love can make people do strange things and sometimes great things.

Love has been Explored in Many Fields

From mythology, philosophy to literature love has been explored by many individuals. Some ancient cultures have deities who embodied love like Venus and Eros, who were personifications of love. Ancient people tried to understand the abstract and inexplicable phenomenon through attributing different facets of life such as love by linking the idea of love with the divine.

Love can be Challenging

While love is thought to be a beautiful feeling by most, it also comes with its own challenges. Everyone is different and like mentioned above everyone has their own unique perspective on love. In the modern digital age love can be even more challenging, with numerous distractions available online. Differences in communication can also be a barrier when it comes to romantic love, which is what most individuals think of when they encounter the word ‘love.’

I hope this gave you a brief understanding of 'what is love?', which is one of the most searched questions on google!
