Why I Finally Decided to be a Freelancer

While it does seem comforting and exciting to get a huge paycheck at the end of the day, I feel that money can’t truly buy contentment and peace, which for me is more important at this point in my life than happiness. I have worked at corporate jobs, and I think I prefer the autonomy and the sense of accomplishment I receive from clients over that big juicy paycheck that lands in your back account and is gone before you know how or where it went. Of course, you might say, but Dulee, money is important. Yes, it is, but everything comes at a cost, even happiness and contentment and sometimes the price we pay for overworking ourselves and spending time in a job we’d rather not be doing in terms of mental health and sometimes physical health, makes it questionable if we should indeed be a part of the 9 to 5 rat race.

Freelancing Gives Freedom

Freedom is priceless, I truly believe so. While freelancing is certainly not a bed of roses, (it’s more of a bed of thorns when it comes to getting orders), it does allow you to have more freedom with how you spend your time. You are your own boss and therefore you can’t blame a boss or coworker if things go wrong, as they do sometimes, especially when you don’t get enough orders. I am still learning how to do this so that I have a consistent stream of orders to help replace my old full-time job salary. It has been a tough ride, especially the marketing aspect as marketing is not my top talent. But that hasn’t stopped me from trying to figure it out. Just remembering how much I didn’t enjoy the 9 to 5 hustle (or hassle if I might want to say so) as a past employee, made me want to choose freelancing and stick to it, for good.

Freelancing Opens Doors to New Opportunities

While sticking to a 9 to 5 job means that you will be doing the same kind of thing over and over again most of the time, this isn’t true at all when it comes to freelancing. At least, that has been my experience. While it is challenging sometimes, especially when it comes to finding work consistently, when work does come, you get so many good opportunities to put all your skills, experience, expertise and knowledge into practice by using them in practical projects and situations.

No Two Days are the Same

If you love variety and diversity, then freelancing might just be the thing for you. If you don’t like working in stifling corporate jobs where you have to do the same mundane and rather similar tasks on a daily basis, you have some say on how you work, when you work and how you get paid. This is pretty cool because you are your own master and you get to work with different people from all over the world from the comfort of your home.
