How to Get Ideas to Write Fantasy Books

If you have always wanted to be a writer and write your own stories, then you might have wondered how to build your own world. This is very relatable if you decided to write fantasy, which is often set away from the life we live everyday, though sometimes it might overlap.

If you are struggling to build your fantasy world, here are some ways to kickstart your imagination and get going.

Read both the Classics and Latest Books

Most of us either read the classics and ignore the latest books that are being published or viceversa. But if you want to become the best writer you can be, you need to read diverse books, not just limit yourself to one area or genre. Sometimes stories from other genres might spark an idea if you will feel like writing and developing into a full blown story. Just think about stories all the time, and remember to rest too.

Watch Movies, and Listen to Songs

While some writers say not to watch movies, I think movies can offer us a lot of inspiration, as long as we don’t replace writing with watching movies. As long as we write consistently it’s okay to watch and learn from movies, about things like storytelling and characterization.

Another way to get ideas is to listen to songs. I love to write while listening to music. While this might not work for you, listening to songs might spark new ideas for your story and new characters that will make your story come to life.

Brainstorm

Yes, that’s right! You need to allocate some time to get ideas and write them down. Start small, five minutes a day. Write down all your ideas how ridiculous and absurd you think they might be. There are no such things as bad ideas, there are ideas that are better than others, perhaps, but having your ideas in place where you can go back to them will help you when you feel like you are running out of ideas to write.

Watch Documentaries

I have got some ideas for stories from watching documentaries. Real events can often inspire fantasy. It doesn’t necessarily need to be an outlandish idea, it can be simple as finding a new road that leads to a magical place behind some stone threshold of a castle in some faraway countryside. Your imagination is your limitation.

Draw from Myths, Legends and Folklore

These stories have stood the test of time. Myths, legends and folklore have inspired and continue to inspire some of the greatest writers of our time. You can’t go wrong from being inspired by these timeless classics. Oftentimes, these stories can be found for free online. Take your time to search for them, read them and learn from them.

I hope you found this article useful if you are an aspiring fantasy writer or perhaps even if you are a published seasoned pro. If all else fails just write whatever comes to your mind and edit later. If there is a will there is a way, and this is certainly true when it comes to writing.
