Money Management for Freelancers: How to Stay Financially Secure

Image
You will learn it the easy way or the hard way - that money has wings as long as you give it wings. How do you give it wings? By not planning out your finances. At this point in time, I’m struggling with the aforementioned issue. I have a habit of spending impulsively - which is something I see as being detrimental to my financial stability. I’m trying to cut costs as much as possible - the first thing I thought of doing was to stop eating out and to stop lending people money without knowing for sure that they will pay it back (unless it is a gift of course). People have a way of taking advantage of people who don’t have a proper financial strategy in place. While it does sound rather harsh, I am writing this because I firmly believe that everyone should plan out how they spend their money - or suffer the consequences (like I have). While failing and making mistakes is inevitable, learning from them is super important. If you don’t learn from your mistakes, you will keep repeatin...

How to Stay Creative in a Fast-Paced World

Image
Staying creative in a fast paced digital world can be as difficult as it has ever been. We all have just 24 hours and having so many options on how to spend time or waste time at our fingertips isn’t really good for all of us. Most of us have access to some sort of smart device, which can either help you stay creative and motivated or make you feel drained or stressed. I personally believe that creativity is the best skill or trait you need to invest in as it is what leads to innovation and breakthroughs, allowing you to stand out in an increasingly competitive world.  Get off the Phone  I know how you feel when someone says that, cause my mom says that all the time. Though I don’t like hearing it too often, I know she has a point. While the phone might be entertaining and take your mind off your problems (at least for the shortest time span possible), it doesn't serve well when it comes to creativity. I used to think it was because it limited how one thought or imagine...

Lessons for Sri Lankans - We all have to change at a personal level

I felt fed up with being bombarded by a billion WhatsApp messages and some calls I was getting. Sometimes stress hits you like an asteroid. I also felt super guilty for wasting my time talking to people on the phone. I cared about these people, but I thought we were killing time in every sense, and it got to me. Time is precious, and I feel that we can do so much to make this world a better place. Calling and messaging often won't get that accomplished. At least it doesn't most of the time. It was then that I came across a Youtube video that said to try and quit social media for six months. I thought I would give it my best shot, and here are some things that I realised while being alone. Lesson 1#: Most people, at least 90%, don't care. I had a colleague, no, several colleagues from college who thought people cared about what they posted on social media. I think they need to step down from their imaginary pedestals for a minute and see that no one cares. Not really. Well, ...

What is the meaning of life?

When I was searching the most searched questions on Google, this popped up. This question is a deeply philosophical one. Over the years, philosopher's have debated and argued about this question over and over again. They have given and come up with different answers to this question.   I hope, in this article, to answer this question to the best of my abilities.  In my opinion, we are the agents who imbue life with meaning. Our lives acquire meaning depending on how we decide to spend our energy. For example, we may choose to live a productive life, pursue our dreams, and try our best to achieve our goals and ambitions. I believe this is a life well-lived, and thus, this kind of life can be said to be meaningful. Life can throw different obstacles. Our lives can be riddled with other issues, and we might question the meaning of our life. However, there are various things you can do as a person to make your life meaningful.   For example, living in the moment, li...

What I learned as a 24 year old

We see what we want to see!  Often, in life, when making decisions and taking our choices into account, we know what we choose to see. We don't focus on the whole picture but instead focus on things that seem to stand out, especially what we consider to be flaws and defects. When we are busy looking for what is wrong, we often miss out on everything right. Focusing wholly on the negative aspects of things is one of the root causes of our unhappiness.  Don't compare yourself! We compare ourselves. Rather than focusing on what we already have and how to build on what we've got, we look for things that we don't have and think, "how lucky they are. They have everything I ever wanted." The item you might not be seeing is what these so-called people you admire or envy even might not have or might have gone through to have to be able to possess these things. Perhaps they worked hard to get what they wanted. Also, if they have something, such as being born into a weal...
